Zululand Yacht Club Autumn Fishing Competition

Notice of Competition and Invitation to enter:

Dear Members
The season is changing and that rare, transient time is arriving when temperatures are cooling fast, the Summer migrant fish have not quite left yet but the Winter fish have started to arrive. With this in mind the Zululand Yacht Club will be hosting a Fishing Competition on the New Moon Spring tides weekend 03-05 May.
As always the competition is structured to cater for everybody. The Competition is multi discipline and open area and is intended to cater for all Members, fishing off their Yachts, Motor vessels, dinghies, fishing skis & SUP Boards as well as from the bank at the ZLYC (there will be special prizes for those fish caught fishing within reach of the barman! As well as for Juniors, Ladies, and fish caught while trawling under sail, The main object is to have fun). The area is open and includes the Bay and open sea areas, limited only by the range of your vessel.
The previous Zululand Yacht Club Garrick Competition, Summer, Autumn & Winter fishing competitions were a fantastic success and I would like to invite those members that missed the fun not to miss out again. We hope that the strong competition amongst the Juniors and the new “Young Guns” section that we saw during the last few competitions will continue in this event and we will make sure to provide for this in the prizes that we arrange for this competition. As with the previous Competitions, the Competition will be judged on measured photos of your catch taken on the official Competition measuring tape sponsored by RB Signs and obtained at the briefing on Friday 03 May at 19h00 in The Jib & Anchor Bar.

With this judging system there is thus no reason to kill your fish and those who wish to release their catch unharmed are encouraged to do so. There is no weigh-in of dead fish! Kob over 1m long and Garrick are ‘no-take’ species in all ZLYC competitions, in recognition of their critically low surviving stocks, and although a measured and carefully released fish of these species can still win the competition, anyone killing one of these will be disqualified.
The competition runs from the closing of the briefing on Friday night until 12h00 on Sunday afternoon. People can fish as much or as little during this time as they please (vessels can even remain at sea throughout this time if they chose to). Any Members who want to camp at the Club for the weekend benefit from the special camping rate for events! Please just book your Camping in the normal way with the Office and specify that you are part of the event (you must pre-enter the competition to receive the reduced camping rate.
All entry photos must be e-mailed to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by 12h00 Sunday afternoon or brought and presented at the “weigh in” by this time (bring your SD Card or memory stick). No photos of catches received after 12h00 on Sunday will be considered. The prize giving will be held at the Jib & Anchor at 13h00 on Sunday afternoon ( or the Wetbar, weather permitting). Braai packs will be available to braai after the prize giving on Sunday
The Competition entry fee for members is R75/adult entry for members and R50/entry for Juniors (under 12), participants can enter either at the ZLYC office or contact Morgan Smit. Price for Non-Members is R100 for adults and R75 for under 12s. Our usual Club rules of access applies: Members, Guests of Members and Members of reciprocal Clubs. Guests need to be signed in by a member. Although the competition is mostly aimed at Club members and their guests. Non members are most welcome to participate. Non-Members who do not have a member buddy to fish with are most welcome to come and fish as my guests, all that I ask is that in this case the person pre-enters at least a week beforehand so that I am not swamped with signing in a crowd of people on the night of the briefing. Please come and join in the fun! Non Members who wish to take advantage of this should please contact me at the address below.

Prizes will be awarded in the categories of Open Sea, Bay and From the Club Banks, with best fish on merit winning each category, extra merit will be awarded for fish caught using more challenging fishing methods(e.g. Vertical Jigging, Drop-shot, Spinning, Flyfishing).
